- Chainrings are fitted to the crank arms and come in single, double or triple configuration.
- Most geared bikes use a 3/32 inch width, whereas 1/8 inch is the popular choice for track bikes and some single speeds due to its increased strength which is needed when riding a fixed wheel.
- Chainrings are available in a number of formats, these are known as PCD's (Pitch Circle Diameter) or BCD's (Bolt Circle Diameter), this is the spacing of the bolts that secure the rings to the crank arms.
- Common sizes are 74mm inner ring Shimano MTB, 110mm middle and outer for Shimano MTB, 110mm for most compact chainsets to allow for the smaller ring combos, 130mm for Standard Shimano Road and 135mm for Standard Campagnolo road chainsets.
- 144mm are compatible with most track/pista cranksets such as Dura Ace and Campagnolo Record.
